  • Your Son is Autistic and you Aren't Doing Anything to Help Him

Hey world! I haven't done a video forever! I attended a class over the weekend where I learned all about the history of disabilities. It was very eye opening to learn that not that long ago parents that birthed children with disabilities were told to institutionalize them and go home and have another baby. That's just what you did. It got me thinking about all of the impactful statements that have been said to me in my six year journey. They vary from....'your son is not autistic because he waves,' to 'your son is autistic and you aren't doing anything to help him,' to 'your son will never speak, make a friend, or ride a bike.' Those statements did more damage to me as a mom then I can fully describe. And then years later I found our people. You know, the ones that understand autism. I ...

I get questions constantly asking how having a child with autism affected my marriage. They come from parents of kids with disabilities thare going through the same struggles and stresses that I go though. I'll be honest, for years I blamed the breakdown of my marriage on Autism. The sheer stress of it. The weight of it. The chaos that surrounded us the instant we received the diagnosis. Autism has its own force. I often refer to it as a tornado. In order to help our son we had to give up complete control of our lives and follow its path.   At times it was all too much. It was more than two people could handle. I was wrong though. Autism didn’t cause our divorce. The heartbreak of it did. And the different way that two people perceived grief.  And in the end, it brought us back to together...

The child in this video, Isaac, is a NON VERBAL Autistic 8 year old boy that can sing! One day I was teaching a SPED music class, and he broke out in song, singing the Peabo Bryson Disney duet "Beauty and the Beast"! I was in tears! For several weeks, I tried to capture him singing on video, but he would freeze up. One day, he started singing Beabo Bryson's other Disney Duet "A Whole New World", and he was singing Acapella (with no music accompaniment)! I recorded him on my iPhone, took his recording back to my studio, and discovered that he was singing in the same key as the original version, but he had no music reference! He has perfect pitch! He also would change the sound of his voice from the male to the female vocalist! I then recorded music to accompany his voice, and played it for Isaac. When he heard himself on the recording, he started singing along! I took videos with my iPhone, and a friend of mine who is a great videographer edited this film together so I could share with others! Please share this video, because there are other Autistic children out there like Isaac that have amazing music abilities, and these abilities can be used as a form of communication! For example, after Isaac started singing for me, his teacher tried singing a question to Isaac, and he answered in song! This could happen for others like Isaac! Let's help these children communicate! God Bless!

The world according to autistic people El mundo según gente autista Wie Autisten die Welt sehen This is part of a collection of videos which will help you understand how people inside the autistic spectrum like myself experience the world around them: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLga2tc3NRKUC9RQ-74l09ggElBy6RsO0Z Everyone inside the autistic spectrum is different and has a unique personality. So this video and the others in the collection are in no way a generalization. They are just supposed to give you a hint how some of us "spectrumites" may experience the world. ---

I built Cooper's village. And I started to hear statements like, 'Cooper CAN do it,' and 'always expect more of your son.' These statements completely changed the way I perceived my son's disability. Find those people. I am the mother to a nonverbal six year old on the spectrum. I share a glimpse into our secret world at: www.findingcoopersvoice.com Follow our journey on Facebook!

And in the end, it brought us back to together. I am the mother to a six year old, nonverbal boy on the spectrum. I share a glimpse into our secret world at Finding Coopers Voice.
